Primary Purpose:
Assist the Director of Special Education in the management and supervision of the district’s
Special Education program by performing a variety of administrative tasks related to policy implementation, compliance with legal regulations, and maintaining educational standards
Education/Certification:
Master’s Degree or Higher
Teaching Certification with Special Education Endorsement
Administrative Certification
Diagnostician or LSSP certification (preferred)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Understanding of all federal, state, and local requirements associated with Special Education Ability to facilitate Special Education program with teachers, principals, diagnosticians, and other personnel
Strong organizational, communication, public relations and interpersonal skills Prior supervisory experience preferred
Experience:
At least 3 years of successful experience as a classroom teacher (preferably in special education)
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Trustees may find appropriate and acceptable

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional and Program Management
- Assist Director of Special Education with setting budget based on recommendations regarding campus/ staff
- Collaboratively plan, implement and evaluate TEKS-based, scientifically researched-based interventions with district staff, and provide resources and materials to teachers and department
- Collaborate with staff to develop and manage Extended School Year (ESY)
- Support collaboration between Special Education and General Education to promote coordination for programs, and to provide the least restrictive environment, as appropriate to meet each student’s individual
- Supervises the ordering, inventory, and distribution of materials and equipment for assigned special education programs.
- Provide appropriate professional development for special education instructional and related service staff in assigned areas of responsibility.

School/Organization Improvement
- Oversee the maintenance of eligibility folders, referrals, and evaluation timelines to comply with state and federal
- Assist in ensuring that department operations contribute to the attainment of district goals and objectives, and in providing FAPE to each student with special
Personnel Management
- Supervise and evaluate the work of special education departmental personnel (such as LSSPs, Diagnosticians, Speech and Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Teachers for the Visually Impaired, etc.) in assigned areas of responsibility.
- Indirectly supervise school–based special education teachers and assist school principals with evaluating them.
- Provide legal and technical assistance, advice and provide problem analysis and solution assistance to administrators, teachers, and evaluation personnel in an effort to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations, and to meet students’ individual
- Chairs eligibility and IEP meetings as assigned by the Director of Special Education.
- Collaborate in developing, compiling, and updating annually department handbooks and operating
School/ Community Relations
- Work with parents in a fair and impartial manner, always with the understanding that the parent is interested in what is best for the
- Serves as the central office contact and liaison with parents and the community regarding assigned special education instructional programs.
- Represents and interprets Special Programs to professional staff, parents, and the general
- Promotes communication and program development in Special Education to provide a continuum of services for the students with
- Provide training to district staff on Federal and State law and district policies and
- Facilitate parent training options and opportunities on topics related to their children and their needs.
Miscellaneous
- Represent the district in the out-of-district placements and non-public
