Primary Purpose:
The Head Swimming Coach is directly responsible to the Aquatics Director| District Head Coach. The role of the Head Swim Coach is to develop and direct the swimming program at the high school campus assigned as well as oversee their own Middle School’s aquatics programs.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s Degree
A valid Texas Teaching Certificate
American Red Cross Lifeguard Certified.
Preferred qualifications: American Swim Coaches Association Member/Certified. USA Swimming Certified. American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches
Special knowledge/skills:
Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing athletes.
Ability to interpret policy, procedures and data.
Ability to assist in managing budget and coordinate district functions.
Strong communication, public relations and interpersonal skills.
Competitive swimming strokes, strategies, techniques, training knowledge.
Experience:
Minimum experience: Experience in sport assigned at the high school or college level preferred. Successful years of experience at the lower level will also be considered. Must possess knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Aquatics Director, school administrators, parents, and student-athletes.
Preferred experience: Previous swim coaching experience and/or extensive experience in aquatics.
Desired experience: Head coaching experience at any level or USA/AAU level.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Trustees may find appropriate and acceptable.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Serve as the Assistant Head Swim Coach at the high school and middle schools assigned.
- Organize and administer the overall program of middle school aquatics for the schools assigned.
- Responsible for recruitment, development, coaching of all schools assigned.
- Responsible for establishing an on-season/off-season plan for Varsity/JV programs.
- Assist the Aquatics Director in arranging transportation, lodging and meals for aquatic events of assigned campuses.
- Assist the Aquatics Director with campuses aquatic program budget.
- Assist and be responsible to the Aquatics Director, campus Principals, campus ACs (jr. high/HS) in all matters concerning aquatic curriculum.
- Assist with the operation of the aquatic program at the feeder middle schools as directed by the Aquatics Director.
- Assist with the operation of the P.E. programs at the assigned schools as directed by the Aquatics Director.
- Install and demand good sportsmanship and fair play.
- Select team members.
- Verify athletes’ eligibility (grades, insurance, waivers, age, attendance, parent permission forms, etc.
- Plan and schedule daily practice sessions in-season and off-season.
- Ensure proper care of injury as well as working with school athletic trainer, team doctor, and parents.
- Promote good communications.
- Relate well to public.
- Develop a team that can compete favorably with other teams in the district.
- Make all district and other honors recommendations (athletic awards prepared and distributed).
- Ensure athletes have transportation home after practice, games, or trips.
- Keep the principal and aquatics director abreast at all times of functions, awards, problems, etc.
- Assist and compile aquatic handbook (philosophy, conduct, awards, etc.)
- Compile May statement on needs, inventory, requisitions, and annual budget.
- Comply and keep abreast of UIL rules, regulations, and reports.
- Oversee safety conditions of aquatics and practice sites.
- Cooperate in the total school program and assisting in other assignments.
- Set a good example for all athletes in and out of the water.
- Prepare schedules for approval.
- Assist visiting teams.
- See to official selection and payment within the athletic program.
- Assist with district wide clinics/camps for aquatic programs.
- Supervise teams below the varsity level (techniques, philosophy, and any other related activities).
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
